Just for Your Information . . .

Zihuatanejo is pronounced "see-wha-tah-NEH-ho" and it comes from Purepecha, the language of the Tarascan Indians and it means - "land of women".

Ixtapa is pronounced "eeks-TAH-pa" and comes from an ancient Nahuatl word that means - "place of white sand." Often, you will hear the name shortened to IxtaZihua.

Legend has handed down through the ages that a Tarascan ruler created the manmade reef at Playa las Gatas in Zihuatanejo to provide a safe beach for his women.
